Clifying criminal background...yes or no on applications?

In addition to the good advice already given, I would add this. Do not lie. Tell the truth. Be straight forward, don't make excuses. Say exactly what happened but don't make a big deal about it. And practice you rap, before the interview. Prepare exactly what you are going to say about it.
