How do you activate skulls in halo 3?

I'm on the first level (the Jungle, so no spoilers please!), and i found a skull. I proceeded to grenade, shoot, melee, and basically press every on on it, but nothing happened. Does simply finding skulls "activate" them, or is it something else.
